5 out of 5 stars Best £30 I've ever spent!   July 21, 2010

With a 2 year old getting up every morning at 6am we were getting pretty desperate to find a solution to somehow keep her in bed just a little bit longer and had looked at various sleep training clocks. A friend recommended the Gro-Clock and I'm glad he did as I'd never heard of it.

This piece of kit is BRILLIANT! The storybook that comes with it is particularly helpful and after just two read throughs the first night using the clock our daughter understood what was expected of her. The next morning 7am arrives and I hear from the next room "Sun's out, wake Mummy up now"! Genius! From day one it worked. I thought maybe it was a fluke but every night since she has only got up when the sun comes out...and we bought it 2.5 months ago.

Worth noting that it's mains operated only so you need to make sure you have a socket in a convenient place. It would be really useful if there was the option of battery operation as well for when you're travelling. The only other gripe I have is that the time is displayed with digits (ie. "7.30pm") so no hope of using it as a teaching aid for learning the time - it would be excellent if it displayed a digital dial clock throughout the day.

All in all it is a fantastic concept and since it's all digital there are no noises to wake your little one if they happen to sleep in for once (like some of the other sleep training clocks). Thoroughly recommend this product and I wouldn't be without it now.

5 out of 5 stars An end to early risers   July 19, 2010

I was a bit dubious about this clock before buying, but I can happily say that it has absolutely transformed my daughter's sleep habits.

I had three reservations before buying:
1. that my daughter would completely ignore it
2. (conversely) that my daughter would obey it rigidly and stay in bed when she'd had a nightmare
3. that the transition from night to day would wake her when she was otherwise asleep

When it arrived, my daughter (age 3) was very excited about having a "grown up" clock. I set it up and we read the story together. The first morning, she came into our room as normal, but was taken back to bed and told to stay put until the sun came up. This was repeated for another two mornings and then it all clicked into place. Since then, the clock works about 90% of the time.

The only times it hasn't worked were when my parents were visiting (and my daughter was far too excited about seeing her grandparents) or when my 1 year old son wakes up early and stands in his cot shouting.

None of my reservations have been founded and it's taken away a lot of the stress around bedtime.

My tips for success:
1. read the story regularly (my daughter particularly loved seeing "her" clock in a book)
2. be consistent about returning your child to bed if the sun isn't up -- for the first few days I did this even if there was only 10 mins to go
3. don't have unrealistic expectations as to how long you can get your child to sleep for (for example, our week-day time is the same time we get up, because I can't expect her to stay in bed if she can hear us moving around)

4 out of 5 stars A sleep Saver   July 19, 2010

This clock has been money well spent. My 2 year old daughter has always been an early riser but since Christmas had been waking earlier and earlier until 5 am was considered a late morning for us. I was desparate when the clock arrived and six weeks after we started using it her normal wake up time has changed from 4.30 am to just after 6 am.

She does wake up earlier sometimes but knows not to call out until the sun comes up and although this took a good 2-3 weeks to work she seems to understand now and always says at bedtime 'no shouting until sun'.

My only complaint with the clock is that after about a week it suddenly stopped working and coming on at the correct set time. I phoned the help line who told me to unplug it and re set it which didnt work and then to send it back for them to look at. However I have now set the day nap wake up time and morning wake time to the same and this seems to have solved the problem and as I dont use the clock for day time sleeping doesn't cause me any problems.

I was a bit dubious about this clock at first, but it does work. We have had a problem with our 3 year old son waking at 5.30am for a while now, and then being tired and irritable for the rest of the day. We thought we would give this clock a try because it had such good reviews. For the first couple of mornings, he would come through to our room and tell us the sun wasn't up yet, so I told him to go back to bed until he had come up, and he did (something he would never have done before). After that, I would hear him awake before the sun came up, but he didn't come into our room, and now he is up after the sun has come up! Fantastic! We are all getting a bit more sleep, and I don't mind jumping out of bed at 7am anymore because I haven't been awake since 5.30am!
