Great timing, price, condition and all that (excellent books too!) With one oddity. 7 of the 8 books had the non-tv tie in covers, but book 2 was the TV show cover with the actors on.

This is a pretty good series to read - enjoyable, not too heavy going, though a little predictable. Great bargain from Amazon for the boxed set of 8. Would highly recommend to any vampire/fantasy fanatic.

I LIKE the TV series, I LOVE these books but its very clear to me that the two together wont appeal to everyone because they are significantly different from one another.
For a start the books are written in the first person from the point of view of a 25 year old barmaid, whereas the TV series explores more the other characters/situations. Also the stories vary quite a bit and the more the TV series goes on the further it departs from the story line of the novels - almost as if the screen writer has chucked Charlaine Harris' version of things into a metaphorical bowl and given it all a good mix, the result being a parallel dimension where the characters and events are recognisable but not the same. This can grate to be honest, especially if your favourite book/chapter is skipped or mutilated! Equally if you really enjoyed the TV series you may be annoyed that the books differ.
As far as the writing goes, well its such a subjective area, there's no right or wrong and everyone is of course entitled to their opinion. Personally Charlaine Harris' style suits me, I thought it was chatty, humourous, sexy and she even managed to convey the accent which I really enjoyed. I have read complaints about typo's/grammatical errors but I honestly didn't think there were many, the story is primary focus and I can't remember the last time I felt so complelled, I have literally flown through these books and am going back to start again!
If you're not sure whether these, or any other, books will suit you I suggest hiring from a library, borrowing from a friend, or just buying the first one (its only a £5) to try it out rather than jumping in and splashing out on the boxed set straight off. I really wouldn't be put off by a small number of negative comments when the number of positives is so overwhelming, you could miss out on something wonderful. Better to regret having done something than to regret never having done it at all I say!
